Osteoporosis Treatment

For those who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, there are several ways to help slow the progress of the disease and possibly prevent future complications. Through diet, exercise and medication, bone loss can be slowed and bone thickness can possibly be increased.

Physical Therapy

At Mount Carmel, we offer a Physical Therapy Program for Women to help keep bones strong and healthy for a lifetime. Our physical therapy regimen will include an evaluation with one of our experienced physical therapists along with a personalized exercise program to help improve posture and strength, prevent falls and decrease risk for fractures. A physician referral is required.

Vertebroplasty and Balloon Kyphoplasty

For those with advanced osteoporosis and who are suffering from vertebral fractures, surgeries and other pain management procedures are available. Vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty are two such procedures available at Mount Carmel. Both are minimally invasive and are effective in treating pain and correcting spinal fractures by gently raising the collapsed vertebra. In some cases there is immediate pain relief. A physician can determine if such a procedure is appropriate.
