Minimally Invasive Surgery
With the advent of new technology, it is now possible to perform many procedures and surgeries with minimal disruption to the body. Although most hospitals perform some minimally invasive surgery, at Mount Carmel we are proud to perform over 40 procedures in 8 specialty areas. We conduct research on techniques and outcomes. We invest in new technologies and equipment. And, our physicians train other physicians from throughout the country.
Our commitment to minimally invasive technology extends to procedures, research and training at our four hospital locations and our surgery centers. The cornerstone of our Minimally Invasive Surgery Program is the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System located at Mount Carmel East, Grove City and St. Ann’s.
What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery is performed with minimal disruption of the body through small incisions or existing openings in the body. These techniques are less traumatic to the body than traditional surgery and have the following benefits:
- Less pain
- Less scaring
- Shorter hospital stays
- Fewer complications
- Faster recovery time
- Faster return to normal activities
- Less blood loss in surgical procedures
Is minimally invasive surgery right for you?
Minimally invasive surgery is not for everyone. In making decisions about the best option for you, your surgeon will consider a number of factors including: your anatomy, age, weight, general health and history of surgeries. Your surgeon will also consider his/her experience with and preference for various techniques. As a patient, you will want to make sure that your surgeon is well-trained and experienced in minimally invasive procedures.
