Alert Details
- We ask that EMS notify the ER of a stroke alert as soon as possible to start the alert process.
- When EMS calls a stroke alert, the Mount Carmel stroke team is activated immediately.
- We ask that all EMS:
- Use a standardized stroke tool to identify neuro deficits (MEND, FAST, RACE, LAMS, etc.)
- Identify AND document EXACT last known normal (LKN) time AND symptom discovery time
- Obtain fingerstick glucose
- Obtain 12 lead EKG, but do not delay transport to obtain
- Not administer O2 unless RA sat < 94%. If needed maintain O2 sat 94-99%.
- Not delay transport unless life-saving intervention is needed
- Insert two large-bore IVs in antecube area preferably an 18G or 20G
- Complete pre-arrival lab draws
- Obtain as much patient history as possible focusing on:
- Use of anticoagulation AND time last dose
- History of recent surgery, hemorrhage, stroke, AMI, systemic bleeding, head trauma, seizure, diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease
- History of IV contrast allergy
- List of current medications
- Record witness name and contact info if they are unable to come in with patient
- The Mount Carmel ER staff, including a physician, meets EMS at the door to expedite a rapid assessment while escorting EMS and the patient to CT

- We offer teleneurology services in our Emergency Departments at Mount Carmel St. Ann's and Mount Carmel Lewis Center.
- Our experienced staff of neuroradiologists provides diagnostic imaging services utilizing the latest technologies, including 320-slice CT scanners, 3T magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, x-ray, angiography, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine and PET scanning.
- Mount Carmel is the first and only hospital in Ohio to offer BodyTom® — the world’s first intra-operative, fullbody, 32-slice CT scanner.
- Mount Carmel's Stroke Program educates and continuously updates a select network of skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities with the goal of giving our stroke patients immediate access to better post-acute care.
