The Graduate Medical Education Department issues resident call schedules on a monthly basis. Call schedules for students on general surgery will be determined on their first day of orientation.

General Surgery students will be notified of call room locations by their teams.

Most of our residency programs have regular teaching conferences that medical students on their services are welcome to attend. Please check with the residents on your service or program administrator of the specialty for detailed information of these conferences. Journal articles are also available to medical students.

In case of illness while you are on this rotation, please contact your student health service or private physician for medical care. If you become ill or injured, you or a family member or friend must contact the attending physician and resident on your service as soon as possible. Please also contact the program administrator of the specialty in Medical Education Department. If you are injured while on duty, you must submit an incident report to Medical Education after you have returned to duty.

In the event of a significant blood or body fluid exposure, you need to notify the resident or attending on your service so that the patient can be asked to be tested. You also need to submit an incident report to Health Services at Mount Carmel and notify the appropriate office at your medical school.

As a medical or osteopathic student on this clinical rotation, you are required to abide by the related Mount Carmel rules, regulations, and policies. You are also required to follow the standards of the clinical service you are on and its support departments. For clarification of any hospital policies or procedures, please contact the program administrator of the specialty in the Medical Education department.

You are required to wear a Mount Carmel identification badge properly whenever you are on the hospital premises. The badge needs to be worn at the chest level, with your picture and ID clearly visible. Your badge will be issued during the orientation and will expire at the end of the last day of your scheduled rotation.

The library services are available to all students upon request. The link to the library site is: Mount Carmel Health Sciences Library. If you would like access please complete the registration request at this link.

There are satellite library stations at Mount Carmel St. Ann's and Mount Carmel East. The main library is located in the College of Nursing on the Franklinton campus, should one wish to utilize their on-site services. If a student checks out reference materials, be sure to return them before the last day of the rotation.

Lockers are provided to students on Ob/Gyn, General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery. It is preferred that students do not bring items of value that are not needed for their rotations as Mount Carmel will not assume responsibility if items are lost or stolen.

Parking space at Mount Carmel Hospitals is free. Security asks that all medical students park in areas designated for Associates

Please notify, in advance, the Graduate Medical Education department, the resident, and the teaching faculty member of your service of any time you will not be in attendance. If you need an extended leave of absence while on this rotation, please contact the program administrator of the specialty in the Graduate Medical Education Department as soon as possible.
