JULY 2024
This special edition of Impact Insider highlights Mount Carmel’s commitment to bringing its mission to life.
Heritage week celebrates Mount Carmel’s rich history
Across the health system and the community, Mount Carmel celebrated Heritage Week July 15 – 20, honoring its founding 138 years ago by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Colleagues had the opportunity to reconnect to the history and mission of Mount Carmel through special events, interactive meeting and exhibits, Blessings of the Hands, special reflections, and leaders rounding with snacks and prayer cards.
“This week is a time for us to look back at the storied history of Mount Carmel; focus on how our amazing colleagues raise up our Mission; and, look forward to the future,” says Mission Leader William Hubbard. “Our colleagues are leading us into the future, and they are aware of the things that never change here - our compassionate touch and the reverence that the Sisters of the Holy Cross instilled in us. We are grounded in that history and realize that we are the ones writing our story for 100 years from now.”
The Heritage Week celebrations wrapped on Saturday morning, with a walk at the Franklinton Campus, where the health system was established.
Jennifer Ostheim receives 2024 Sisters of the Holy Cross Award
Our colleague, Jennifer Ostheim, LISW, who works in the Graduate Medical Education department, is the recipient of the 2024 Sisters of the Holy Cross Award. Jennifer’s extraordinary, months-long compassion and care for an individual who suffered amnesia as a result of an accident was the living, breathing embodiment of the Sisters’ legacy. Jennifer helped the individual, who was unhoused at the time of his accident, get his medication, insurance, transition to stable housing and get the Social Security income he was entitled to receive.
Jennifer truly met this individual where he was, guided by compassion and focused on healing mind, body and spirit. She listened to his story with its many inter-related complexities, and partnered with him over months to address key challenges he faced. Today he is safely housed and living with the support and medicine he needs and deserves.
Mount Carmel's long-standing legacy of caring for the most vulnerable in our communities began with the Sisters of the Holy Cross more than 138 years ago. The Sisters of the Holy Cross Award was created to honor Sister Barbara Hahl, C.S.C., and all those who have served at Mount Carmel Health System. This award celebrates our history of caring by recognizing colleagues and physicians who reflect our Mission, Core Values and commitment to providing high-quality care in the work they do every day.
Rapid Relief Team hosts lunch for students and colleagues
On June 27, our Franklinton colleagues were treated to a signature burger lunch provided by the Rapid Relief Team (RRT), an organization that delivers hope and relief to people worldwide.
“RRT Columbus regularly supports and recognizes the tireless efforts and hard work of the hospital staff and medical work force within our community,” says RRT Team Leader Tom White. “We were very grateful to the Mount Carmel Health System for giving us this opportunity to serve the staff at the Mount Carmel Franklinton campus! RRT is committed to recognizing frontline workers by providing meals and refreshments, allowing them to take a moment out of their day to be acknowledged for their hard work!”
RRT has a longstanding history of supporting hospitals and healthcare workers, among their many worthy activities, and we are grateful for their generosity and commitment to community and caring for others.
F. Kevin Hackett, MD, delivers extraordinary heart care
Mount Carmel Foundation Board member, F. Kevin Hackett, MD, is one of the leading cardiologists at the health system, where he has worked for 30+ years.
“We offer exceptional heart care here,” says Dr. Hackett. “Mount Carmel cardiologists, throughout the communities we serve, are a top-notch team.”
Dr. Hackett, a recent recipient of Mount Carmel’s Physician of the Year Award, is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. In April, he treated the first atrial fibrillation patient in central Ohio using a newly FDA-approved treatment. The Medtronic PulseSelect™ ablation system uses pulsed electronic fields to effectively, efficiently and safely treat irregular heartbeats.
“It’s exciting to be able to bring new and advanced treatments to our patients. We’re also the only health system in Central Ohio that has a cardiac walk-in clinic. Patients can access same-day cardiac evaluation for non-life-threatening heart symptoms,” he said. The clinic prioritizes patient convenience and peace of mind, lessening the stressful wait for answers, by providing prompt results. If a higher level of care is needed, patients have direct access to world-class cardiologists and facilities throughout the Mount Carmel system.
Mount Carmel also offers a Women’s Heart Health Program, which focuses on the unique heart-related needs of women. Education, prevention and care offered there are designed to reduce the gender gap in diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, the number one killer of women.
The generosity and compassion of donors help make Mount Carmel’s cardiovascular programs a reality.
