Application Process
If you are interested in applying to our General Surgery Categorical or Preliminary Residency Program, here are some recommendations/guidelines to help you get started.
The Mount Carmel General Surgery residency program is a participant in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Only 4th year U.S. medical students are considered for PGY-1 categorical and preliminary positions. 4th year medical students are strongly encouraged to complete a 1-4 week visiting elective rotation at Mount Carmel prior to or during the application process. Contact our office to inquire about rotations and visits and every effort will be made to accommodate and arrange your visit.
We do not mail out applications. All applications must be submitted electronically via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In addition to applying through the NRMP, the following application information must be received no later than November 1st of each recruitment year in order for your application to be considered:
- Dean's Letter (as soon as available)
- Three additional letters of recommendation from medical school or GME faculty are required. Letters from general surgeons or surgical specialists are preferred
- Medical school transcript
- Personal statement
- USMLE Part I or AOBME Part I Board scores, first time pass required
- USMLE Part II or AOBME Part II Board scores, first time pass required
We do not sponsor any type of visa.
Once all of the above information is collected through ERAS, your application will be reviewed by the Program Director and the Associate and Assistant Program Directors. Personal interviews are by invitation only and are held numerous times during October - January. If you have been selected for an interview, you will receive an e-mail invitation to interview from the Program Administrator.
If you have further questions, please call 614-663-4655 to receive step-by-step instructions about our application process. If, after listening to the pre-recorded instructions, you still have questions about our program, click here to e-mail the Program Administrator.
