New partnership expands opportunities to create the health care of tomorrow
The Orthopedic Foundation is now part of Mount Carmel, bringing its neurological, orthopedic, rehabilitative and sports medicine research to the Mount Carmel Research Institute. This new partnership also brought with it a $1.4 million donation to the Mount Carmel Foundation, to be used to support current and future research initiatives.

“Integrating The Orthopedic Foundation’s work into our Research Institute will enable us to build on the legacy and achievements of its founding physicians,” says Cameron Rink, PhD, MBA, director of research operations. “Our work helps bring the future of health care to our patients and providers. We provide access to the latest, greatest drugs and devices being tested and developed to become tomorrow’s standard of care.”
Among the initiatives underway, Dr. Martin Taylor is leading neurology trials exploring the use of Botox for migraine treatment and Dr. Mark Gittins continues his work advancing robotic surgical approaches to total knee replacement.
“Advancing care through research gives our providers a voice in the future of health care,” says Cameron. “This work also supports accreditation for many of our health system departments, which require participation in research and clinical trials.”

Keeping kids safe during travel is one way we care for families
Whether you’re bringing your new baby home from the hospital or taking your grandkids to the park to play, having an unexpired, correctly installed car seat is essential for safe travel. Mount Carmel hospitals and car seat safety events are perfect places to make sure the kids in your life have the safest ride possible.
“We have our staff and volunteers at eight to 10 events around the community each year,” says Linda Howell, MSN, RN, who leads the Care Seat Safety Program. “We provide education to parents and caregivers and we will make sure your seat is current, appropriately positioned for its passenger’s age and weight, and that it’s installed properly, with the seatbelts and anchors used correctly.”
“Many people don’t realize that car seats have expiration dates and that the integrity of their materials degrade over time,” Linda says. “If your seat is more than five years old, it very well could be expired and may need to be replaced.” Linda and her team, through generous foundation donors, are able to provide new seats to families who don’t have the means to buy one.
“We help 500 or more families each year assure the safety of their car seats,” she says. “In addition to community events, you can make an appointment to have your car seat checked at any of our hospitals by calling 614-636-3131. We are the only health system in our area that offers this service.”
More than 50 caring individuals – both colleagues and volunteers – assist in the Car Seat Safety Program. There is always a certified technician at events and at hospital appointments. When moms and newborns are discharged to go home, they can have their car seat inspected before leaving. For patients who have been involved in a car accident, Mount Carmel will provide them with a new car seat before they leave the Emergency Department. “All car seats that have been in an accident should not continue to be used,” says Linda. “When we replace an expired or damaged seat, we collect the old one and dispose of it so that it cannot be handed down or sold to another person who may not be aware of the risk of using it.”
