MARCH 2025
Let’s celebrate our amazing physicians!
On Monday, March 31, 2025, Mount Carmel will recognize Doctors Day and celebrate physicians throughout the health system with special messages, meals and gifts.
These professional caregivers are the heart of the American healthcare system. In the US, doctors provide care to over 1 billion patients yearly, with an average of 3.2 doctor visits per person — 50% of those visits are made to a primary care physician. About 85% of adults and 95% of children in America visit with a doctor each year.
On March 30, 1958, Congress adopted a resolution commemorating March 30 as National Doctors Day after the movement gained traction in the medical community over two decades. These days, doctors’ contributions are celebrated nationwide on March 30 and around the world by employers, coworkers, and patients of physicians.
If you’re inspired to join us in honoring a special physician, you can make a tribute gift in their honor here.
Generous Foundation donors help get lives back in balance
Patients with fall risk and balance issues, including dizziness, can literally feel like life is spinning out of their control. Mount Carmel’s Vestibular Rehabilitation program can help them regain their equilibrium.
Vestibular rehabilitation (also known as balance therapy) is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to decrease dizziness, improve balance, and increase general activity. It can help with fall prevention and vertigo. This therapy is available at Falls and Balance Clinics at Mount Carmel Rehab Services in Westerville, Mount Carmel East and Mount Carmel Grove City.
Donors to the Foundation have helped fund state-of-the-art equipment, including balance plates, to help diagnose balance issues, as well as measure treatment progress. “It’s been more than 12 years since the Foundation helped fund our initial efforts,” said Cynthia Fenstermaker, AuD, CCC-A, audiologist/clinical coordinator, Rehabilitation Services, Mount Carmel Grove City. “We’ve grown into a full vestibular rehab program with their help.”
Physical Therapist Melissa D’Costa is the system lead for vestibular physical therapy. She is one of a handful of board-certified, clinical specialists in neurological physical therapy in central Ohio. Mount Carmel has three of these highly-qualified professionals. “The balance plates that we use are the most advanced devices of their type available today,” she said. “It’s part of what makes us leaders in vestibular therapy and gives us a level of expertise and technology that helps get good outcomes.”
Melissa sees, on average, 50 patients each week. “We use the balance plates every single time we see a patient. When they come in, they can see real progress. It helps keep patients motivated,” she said.
“It’s great to see how much we can improve a patient’s daily life and function,” said Kendyl Paris, a vestibular physical therapist at Mount Carmel East. “They are thankful to get back to doing what they love. Our advanced equipment also helps us give them the tools they need to continue getting better even after they leave our care.”
Outside the health system’s clinics, Mount Carmel therapists have shared and demonstrated the balance plates during Senior Day at the Ohio State Fair and on Safety Day, a Westerville Fourth Friday community event. “It’s one of the most popular booths at the Fair,” said Melissa.
Vestibular therapy typically requires a physician referral. Learn more about Mount Carmel’s Falls and Balance program here.

On April 2, 2025, Mount Carmel will be presented with a Cristo Rey National and Local Corporate Partner Award at the organization’s annual meeting in Columbus. Foundation President Deanna Stewart will accept the award on behalf of Mount Carmel.
“This achievement is a testament to your outstanding commitment to our students as well as the workplace of tomorrow,” said Lillie Sellers, vice present, Partner Experience, Cristo Rey Network. “Your dedication to our Corporate Work Study Program has not only impacted the lives of our students, their families and your community, but has also set a benchmark for excellence in corporate partnerships.”
The Mount Carmel Foundation has partnered with Cristo Rey Columbus High School since it opened its doors in 2013. Currently, 20 students are working at MCHS across a wide variety of functions. They are getting experience in food and nutrition, supply chain, administrative roles, the Mount Carmel College of Nursing library, and at the von Zychlin Healthy Living Center.
Foundation donors make prescription assistance program expansion possible
A longstanding commitment to helping individuals who are unable to afford or access medication they need has expanded in its 20-year history, with support from the Mount Carmel Foundation and its generous donors.
PrescriptionEase was first implemented in fiscal year 2005. Traditionally, it provided assistance to patients seen at Mount Camel St. Ann's Family Practice, Mount Carmel Medical Group, Health Partners, and others within the community.
In fiscal year 2024, the Pharmacy Prescription Support Program (PSP) at the Mount Carmel Outpatient Pharmacy served patients who are underserved and need assistance to get their prescriptions. Patients who are uninsured or unable to receive insurance are eligible for the PSP and can receive medication at little to no cost. This program not only helps patients to receive their medication, but also helps the health system to reduce readmissions, promote community health and well-being, and serve those experiencing poverty.
The goals for the Pharmacy Prescription Support Program are as follows:
- Increase medication access and adherence for uninsured patients
- Decrease emergency department visits and hospital re-admission rates
- Improve patient outcomes
- Improve financial stewardship of Mount Carmel's resources versus other Contract Pharmacies
Since January 2024, the PSP has helped provide 7,022 medications to 1,588 patients.
