Welcome From the Program Director
Welcome to Mount Carmel’s Internal Medicine Residency! Since 1974, our faith-based residency program has prepared hundreds of internists for the life-long calling of practicing medicine. To subspecialty fellowships, private practice, and hospitalist medicine, we have the tools and expertise to fully prepare our residents for any career path they desire. Founded in the core values of compassion and care for the poor, Mount Carmel Health is a large and diverse healthcare system at your educational disposal.
Mount Carmel East, a 400-bed all private-room facility offering a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level 2 Trauma care, houses our ICU and ED months with our dedicated intensivists. At Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, which provides a high-performing cardiovascular center, a Primary Stroke Center, a robust Womens’ Health Center and Maternity Pavilion, and a Cyberknife robotic radiosurgery center, our residents help provide coordinated, multi-disciplinary care in the nation’s first Academic Accountable Care Unit. Alongside our hospitalist partners, we prepare you for the future models of inpatient medicine. At Mount Carmel Grove City, our flagship hospital for Graduate Medical Education, our own inpatient service provides 24/7 coverage, running codes and responding to the acute needs of the hospital.
Each educational site is unique, modern, and fully equipped with latest technology and subspecialty physicians. At Mount Carmel’s Clinical Skills Simulation Center, our residents practice real-life medical situations to perfect patient care and improve outcomes. The Center is a dynamic, system-wide training center with a diversity of high-fidelity human patient simulators and clinical education resources. We also are blessed with expert support from the Mount Carmel Research Institute, helping our residents publish and prepare for regional presentations, posters, and national literature submission.
Our dedicated core faculty bring years of skill and unique perspectives to your educational experience, while our subspecialty preceptors return year after year out of love for our residents. Executive leadership regularly attend many of our conferences, and we repeatedly offer residents the chance to flex their leadership skills in management, safety, and compliance in our training hospitals. We offer a culture of diversity and fellowship, centered around a mission of compassion and hope. With many choices, there’s a reason why so many graduates return to or remain at Mount Carmel. We hope you’ll choose Mount Carmel Health, and we promise to give our best to your education.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matthew Chakan, MD, FACP
