Welcome From the Program Director
From the Program Director
Welcome to Mount Carmel’s Internal Medicine Residency! Since 1974, our program has prepared physicians for meaningful careers in every path of internal medicine—subspecialty fellowship, hospital medicine, or primary care. What has always set Mount Carmel apart is our commitment to education, patient care, and personal well-being.
We believe great physicians are shaped not only by clinical training, but also by an environment that values humanity in medicine. At Mount Carmel, we ask our residents to treat every patient as they would want their own family to be treated—and we extend that same philosophy to how we care for and support our residents. Your physical and mental health matter, and we provide the resources and mentorship needed for a healthy work–life balance.
Our residents train at three unique hospitals—Mount Carmel East, St. Ann’s, and Grove City—each of which exhibits diverse practice environments providing a rich and well-rounded clinical experience that prepares them to thrive in any healthcare setting. This hands-on education is further enhanced by our Clinical Skills Simulation Center, where residents refine their patient care skills by practicing real-world medical scenarios in a safe, controlled environment.
Complementing this clinical training, the Mount Carmel Research Institute offers robust support for scholarly activity, enabling residents to develop research projects, present at conferences, and publish their work. In addition, our program dedicates time for study, research, and wellness, alongside engaging didactic sessions, ensuring that residents grow academically, professionally, and personally.
Equally important is our culture: a supportive, inclusive environment where residents are mentored by dedicated core faculty and subspecialty preceptors. Hospital leadership partners with us in education and invites residents to take part in initiatives in quality, safety, and leadership development.
At Mount Carmel, we want you to thrive not just as a physician, but as a person. Our mission is to cultivate skilled, compassionate internists who lead with knowledge, integrity, and empathy. We are proud that so many of our graduates choose to remain part of our community, and we hope you will too!
Sincerely,
Dr. Karen Avgush
