Surgery for Prostate Cancer at Mount Carmel

Removal of the prostate for prostate cancer is performed at Mount Carmel using minimally-invasive robotic surgery (robotic prostatectomy) in almost all cases, avoiding many of the negative side effects of traditional, open surgery. The surgery is performed through 4 or 5 small incisions using a scope and small robotic instruments with most patients able to go home the same day. The best outcomes with robotic surgery require the best surgeons, since the robot is not programmable but rather every movement of the robotic instruments is controlled by the surgeon. The robotic prostatectomy surgeons at Mount Carmel have performed thousands of such surgeries and are the most experienced prostatectomy surgeons in Ohio and among the most experienced in the world. Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer at Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is a regional leader in radiation therapy for prostate cancer as the only institution in Central Ohio able to offer CyberKnife stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), conveniently located at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital. This technology uses a robotic arm to better localize the prostate and compensate for normal patient movement during treatment so that there is less damage to healthy structures near the prostate. Mount Carmel also offers Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, Mount Carmel Grove City and Mount Carmel East Hospital with the same experts in radiation oncology and their teams to provide patients the best possible outcomes.

Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer at Mount Carmel

Men who have lower risk prostate cancers and are candidates for active surveillance may be able to avoid treatment and its potential side effects. In such cases, a plan for careful monitoring of the cancer will be implemented. Mount Carmel offers patients access to the latest technology to allow such monitoring in addition to standard blood tests and biopsies. Radiologic scans available for prostate cancer at Mount Carmel include specialized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the prostate as well as the recent addition of PSMA-PET scanning, available at only a few centers in Ohio.
