Abbreviated Breast MRI
For patients at moderate risk for breast cancer or with dense breast tissue who would benefit from a supplemental screening with higher sensitivity than a mammogram, Mount Carmel now offers abbreviated Breast MRI. It’s a rapid breast MRI offered at a lower price that can detect cancers not visible on a typical mammogram.
The abbreviated Breast MRI uses radiofrequency waves and a strong magnetic field to provide a detailed view of breast tissue, detecting tissue abnormalities, as well as vascular function within the breast that can show blood flow to and from a tumor. It’s not intended to replace a traditional screening mammogram or a standard Breast MRI, but studies have shown it’s an effective supplement for detecting invasive breast cancers.
The Process
The screening requires an injection of contrast that’s given through an IV. It’s painless, takes approximately 10 minutes (compared to 40 minutes for a traditional MRI), and is radiation-free. The study is then interpreted by a specially trained breast radiologist, who will provide the results to you quickly and accurately.
The Benefits
Abbreviated Breast MRIs can:
- Provide an extra level of screening
- Improve screening comfort for women with dense breast tissue
- Detect small tumors that may not be visible on a mammogram
- Reveal particularly aggressive cancers
- Improve cancer detection rates over a mammogram alone
The Cost
While an abbreviated Breast MRI is not covered by insurance, it is a relatively low-cost, self-pay study. The out-of-pocket cost is just $300, which is less expensive than a traditional MRI when not covered by insurance.
An abbreviated Breast MRI is only available with a physician referral. To see if an abbreviated Breast MRI may be right for you, please talk to your physician.
